Dual wield builds arent really considered bad, but they are more often than not, less optimal than two handers, feat dependant, stat hungry and gear dependant where other builds usually work better with less. Dual wield ranged xbows is considered better than longbow by many.

Tried with two light weapons, a light weapon and one not light weapon and too non light weapons. None of these add the +1 AC bonus. Additionally, not sure if it is intended or not, but the off hand attack is not adding my str or dex (when using a finesse weapon) to hit.

After that the math works out to duelist 2x attacks doing the same damage (but with higher lower range) as dual-wield's 3 attack without burning bonus action. Most people tend to go for +2 dex at level 4, opting for this over the dual wielder feat. I believe the usual reasoning for this choice is based on assuming that the main benefit of dual wielder is giving you access to rapiers over short swords, giving you +1 damage and +1 a/c.
It's best to dual wield with a class that gives the two weapon fighting style to get more damage out of your bonus attack.
