Certain models of the 1500 had a plastic oil gear that was prone to failure. The Vulcan 750, though beloved by it's owners, is a basket case of common problems. The '06 and '07 900's had an issue with the stator.

To get fuel into the oil gas has to get past the petcock. The petcock can leak 2 ways: not properly shutting off or having a diaphram issue and leaking fuel into the manifold thru the vacuum hose. "Best" fix is an earlier non-vacuum off-on-reserve petcock. Or rebuild or replace yours.
