If the connection to the oil resevoir is closed, it alarms. Test by disconnecting one of the 2 wires. 2. It gets a pulse tranin from one of the switchboxes. I think the difference between them is XR2 is 2.0l, XR4 is 2.4l. XR6 is 2.5l. They are all strong 150's. XR2 and XR4 came with 4 1/4 in lowers. My best guess is the high speed charge coil in the stator. It looks like it's getting fuel, but not firing above a certain RPM. A stuck float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't let it idle. A leaking float needle won't be noticed at high speed. They basically stand open at WOT anyway.

Luckily installing the motor and all the controls to my boat has gone pretty smooth so far.Mercury sold the XR2 (2L) from around 1986-1987; the XR4 (2.4L) from around 1988 to 1991; and the XR6 (2.5L) from around 1992 to 2005. Supposedly these motors have about 10% more horsepower than the standard 150's (which I believe to be true) to satisfy the bass boating limits back around then and still categorize them legally as a 150.

Yes the XR2 would rev between 5500 to 6000 compared to 5000-5500 of the standard blackmax. It is slightly ported, 200hp exhaust and jetted carbs. It will give you a slightly better performance then the black max engine if it is still in good shape. Let me know if you have further questions. It depends on a lot of stuff like hull, weight, what the bottom of the boat is configured like, prop type etc. Ive got a 25 pitch laser 2 and for my hull its a hunk of crap. Slips 18% and doesnt handle corners worth a damn unless I drop it 5 inches under the pad.
There should be a hole in the transom bracket and the screw just inside of the hole. Make sure the motor wires are getting +12V. On the two solenoid PTT units, the green wire should have +12V when trimming down, blue wire should have +12V when trimming up and the ground completes the circuit for both." B.
