Switch to the hood when you are at about 25% hp and leach back up, then switch back to the mask. Mask gives you so much more damage that you will want it on most of the time. It's also worth noting that there is a rather large difference in armor between the two. Mask gives 10 more armor IIRC, which is 7.5 damage off of each hit on expert.

On the other hand, there is the spectre hood which has a lot less armor, it has a dmage downgrade no more then 40% (which is a lot) BUT the souls heal you by the 20% of your dmg done.

The spectre mask (damage) does a lot of damage with the orbs. The spectre hood (healing) cuts your damage, but it really makes up for it with the healing. You should probably look at the orb's mechanics before you make a decision, the orbs are the focus of the spectre set.
