Glenfield 30a vs marlin 336.
2087 posts · Joined 2003. #3 · Jan 31, 2018. The 30AS was a budget priced version of the 336. Lots of them were sold at big box stores, on sale. The 30AS has a beechwood stock, instead of walnut. Mechanically, the 30AS is a 336 with a different labeling stamp. I think (not sure) that the 30AS was only available in 30-30.

I have one and cut it down to 16", ported the barrel, laminate stocks, big loop and an XS scout rail. I still have to ream it out to 30-30 Ackley Improved. Some will keep 3 shots into 1", or very close to it, at 100 yards. Some will just barely keep 3 shots in 3". When they were sold they were significantly cheaper than a 336, but today there just doesn't seem to be too much difference in value.

A 1X-4X will be effective at greater distances than the .35 Remington is practical for a shot at game. At the low end, you can find the game animal at 15yds to 20yds in thick cover. At 4X, if you know the drop, you can easily place the shot, (or at least the crosshairs), out to 300yds. Making the shot is shooter dependent.

I replaced the stamped dear head birch stocks (which I still have) with some new Walnut checkered stocks I got off of ebay!
